Ascension of Our Lord (Old Rite: Sunday after the Ascension of Our Lord)

May - The Month of Our Lady: This beautiful month with blossoms, flowers & magnificence of colour is dedicated to our Blessed Lady.  St Bernadette of Lourdes said “nothing down here can compare to the beauty which I have seen”.  The natural beauty of spring compliments the new life of Easter and foreshadows the life of Pentecost.  In the book of Acts, our Blessed Lady is seen in the midst of the Apostles and early Christians praying for the gift of the Holy Spirit.  In the same way we follow the example of Mary, Mother of the Lord in praying for the graces that each of us need.

May Procession Today: At 2pm this afternoon there will be a May procession with Rosary, Benediction and Crowning of Our Blessed Lady, (followed by Vespers for those who wish to stay).  On Tuesday 19th at 10am, we will have our May procession at St Bernadette School at which we say the Hail Mary in many different languages.

Confirmations – 12.30pm Mass Next Sunday: Bishop Patrick Lynch will be here to confirm our 13 candidates.  On Saturday we will have a preparation day starting at 11.30 & on Sunday, all candidates should be at St Bede’s school by 11.45 for the group photo.

Welcome to the Franciscan Sisters from Catford: from the Holy Cross bookshop in Catford who will be selling repository items after some of the Masses this weekend.

The Laurels School need a Temporary Caretaker urgently required.  If you are interested please contact Lara McNanamon ASAP on 020 8674 7229. They would ideally like someone on full-time hours but are happy to discuss part-time too if required!

Open Day: their next Open Day will be on Tuesday 19th May – please see poster at the back of Church.

St Bede the Venerable (673-735) is our heavenly patron and Bank Holiday Monday (25th) is his feast.  As the schools will be on half-term we will celebrate his feast on Friday at the 9.40am Mass.  We pray that he may obtain for us the grace to observe our faith as he did with joy and enthusiasm.  The chronicles of the time testify him being “one of the most observant and happy of Monks”.  May he, in the communion of Saints, by the power of the Holy Spirit teach us this simple lesson: that happiness is the fruit of observance which entails.

World Communion Day: World Communications Day is celebrated today, Ascension Sunday. The theme is 'Communicating the Family: A Privileged Place of Encounter with the Gift of Love'. On this day we are encouraged to pray for communications professionals, especially those who work in the media. Please support the second collection which provides the funding for the Catholic Communications Network.  The CCN provides support for the Bishops of England & Wales and the Church more widely in promoting the Gospel through the media on current issues.  The office is the central point for media enquiries and plays a key role in developing the public profile of the Church.  It is possible to donate online at: www.catholicnews.org.uk/donations. Some commemorative prayer cards for this day have been printed & are available to take away.  Please support the CCN through your prayers & generosity.

Lourdes - 2015 Diocesan Pilgrimage: The Annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes (with the Catholic Association) will take place this year from Fri 21st–Fri 28th August. This year’s theme is ‘Joy of Mission', taken from the Evangelii Gaudium. 2015 is a special year for us in the Diocese of Southwark. Archbishop Peter mentioned in the Foreword in this year’s Southwark Directory - “This year marks a milestone on our diocesan journey as we celebrate 50 years as our diocese was raised to an ‘Archdiocese and Metropolitan See’ ”.

Lough Derg - A Place of Pilgrimage:  Lough Derg, the sacred Sanctuary of St Patrick, is very much a living part of Irish Christian Heritage. A unique island, rich in prayer and faith, an island which has been calling pilgrims for over a thousand years, an island which St Patrick himself was called to.  For many people Lough Derg provides an opportunity to step back from their lives, to take stock and examine the direction which their lives are taking. For many others it is a time to come closer to God through prayer and reflection.
