6th Sunday of Easter (Old Rite: V Sunday after Easter)

Welcome to Fr John Garry from St Patrick's Missionary Society (Kiltegan Fathers) who is with us this weekend to make an appeal.  He has had, and continues to have, a wonderful  life as a missionary priest.  He has spent just over 40 years in Africa - 20 years in Kenya, 15 years very difficult circumstances in war torn South Sudan and just over 5 very happy and fulfilling years in a Sudanese Refugee camp in Northern Uganda. Like many missionaries in Africa in the 1970's he was very involved in various development projects that helped raise the dignity of the people he worked with. He has been involved in building schools, dispensaries, food for work projects, famine relief and food distribution, water and agricultural projects etc. But he says his greatest joy was pastoral work and the joy that Christianity brought to peoples live. When his present assignment of making the annual Mission Appeal in parishes is over, he looks forward to returning to the Diocese of Torit in South Sudan.

May - The Month of Our Lady: This beautiful month with blossoms, flowers and magnificence of colour is dedicated to our Blessed Lady.  St Bernadette of Lourdes said “nothing down here can compare to the beauty which I have seen”.  The natural beauty of spring and summer is a foreshadowing of the Testament; our Blessed Lady is seen in the midst of the Apostles and early Christians praying for the gift of the Holy Spirit.  In the same way we follow the example of Mary, Mother of the Lord in praying for the graces that each of us need.

May Processions: Next Sunday (17th May) at 2pm we will be hold our May procession with Rosary, Benediction and Crowning of Our Blessed Lady.  Before this, there will be ‘Bring & Share’ lunch in the club.  Then on Tuesday 19th May we will have our Annual May Procession at St Bernadette’s School starting at 9.30am.

The Laurels School need a Temporary Caretaker urgently (to start within the next week or so if possible).  If you are interested please contact Lara McNanamon ASAP on 020 8674 7229. They would be like the position to be full-time but are happy to discuss part-time if required.
Spring Fete: Next Saturday 16th May from 12 to 3pm. Lots of see and do: Tombola for both children and adults, cakes, bouncy castle, international food & raffle etc.   Entry is £1 for adults – children are free.

This year’s theme is ‘Joy of Mission', taken from the Evangelii Gaudium. 2015 is a special year for us in the Diocese of Southwark. Archbishop Peter mentioned in the Foreword in this year’s Southwark Directory - “This year marks a milestone on our diocesan journey as we celebrate 50 years as our diocese was raised to an ‘Archdiocese and Metropolitan See’ ”.
