5th Sunday of Easter (Old Rite: IV Sunday after Easter)

Mass Time changes for coming week: -  Monday is a Bank Holiday, so Masses will be at 9am in the Convent, 10am English and 10.45am Latin.

May - The Month of Our Lady: This beautiful month with blossoms, flowers and magnificence of colour is dedicated to our Blessed Lady.  St Bernadette of Lourdes said “nothing down here can compare to the beauty which I have seen”.  The natural beauty of spring and summer is a foreshadowing of the Testament; our Blessed Lady is seen in the midst of the Apostles and early Christians praying for the gift of the Holy Spirit.  In the same way we follow the example of Mary, Mother of the Lord in praying for the graces that each of us need.

Heads will Roll:  At the end of our Religious Education Inspection from the Diocese (more about that later), we heard the news that Mrs Cathy Davis, one of our Co-Heads has been appointed Head of St Anne’s School in Vauxhall.  Congratulations to her but obviously we will miss her very much here as she has been here since 1999.  Up the road at La Retraite, Mr John Conway is leaving after 24 years (4 years as head) to set up a new school in Abu Dhabi.  Mr Dominic Mallins, our Deputy there, will take the reins of the school until September 2016.  Pray that we can find a good successor!

Nepal:  I will send a parish cheque to the Aid to the Church in Need and if you would also like to do the same. Please send a cheque A.C.N, 12-14 Benhill Avenue, Sutton, SM1 4DA

Follow on from Bishop Pat's Visit in January: There were three recommendations that came out of this visit.  (our response is underneath in italics)

  • Something has to be done to better facilitate the transmission of the faith to our young people.  Marco Mosconi would like to begin a Youth Group as soon as possible (who could give him some help please?)  A Youth Mission is planned for the summer (see below).  The former pop star Dana from Ireland is to come next Lent to present something on “Eucharistic Rosary” especially to Youth.
  • The Bishop asks us to lighten our Sunday schedule by giving up one Mass. After painful consideration and a discussion at the Parish Council, we feel that the 12.30 Mass will have to be the one to be eventually dropped.  However we would want to keep the slot open for all our special occasions.
  • Building bridges between the different communities   This is a continual challenge and the Bazaar brings us all together.  Any other ideas?

Youth Mission this July: It has been 15 years since we had our last Mission given by Fr John Edwards SJ (RIP).  A couple of years before that we had a mission given by The Legionaries of Christ and many of you can remember the Missions given by Fr Michael Creech and his brother Fr Terry.  From the 2nd to 12th July we have invited a team from Italy to do a Mission especially directed towards to Youth.

Welcome to Fr Piotr Klym from the same Diocese as Fr Lukasz (Przemyel).  He will be staying with us for the few weeks whilst Fr Chris is away.

Goodbye & Thank You to Fr Markus Doppelbauer who leaves us today and returns to Vienna.

Clergy Support Fund Campaign - Volunteers needed! Next Saturday (9th) at 10.30am, the South East Area Rep for the Clergy Support Fund will be holding a meeting at English Martyrs to help lead & instruct on what we need to do get the campaign under way within our Deanery.  We are desperate to find some volunteers from St Bede’s to go to this meeting!  The Archbishop has asked all parishes to raise funds to help this fund which supports retired and sick priests.  In the next 5 years there will be a shortfall of £4.5 million and we need to find ways of facilitating its upkeep for the future. You can find out more about the fund and why they are asking for everyone's help at the following website: southwarkclergysupportfundcampaign.org.

African & Caribbean Association are holding their first Breakfast Meeting after the 9.30am Mass next Sunday (10th May).  This is the first of what is hoped to be a successful event for the African & Caribbean community within St Bede's.

Altar Servers: The rotas for May & June will be posted online next week.  However we are in need of new Altar Servers to replace those who have now grown up and gone off to college or university.  If you are interested in being an Altar Server, please see fr CB.

Gift Aid Envelopes: Maria Chang, our Gift Aid co-ordinator will be handing out the new boxes of envelopes this weekend.  If you are not yet a participant of the Scheme, and you are a tax payer, please consider joining as it greatly helps the parish finances – at absolutely no cost to you!  If you are a basic tax payer, the Church can claim back the tax, increasing any donation that you make by 25% (more if you are a higher rate tax payer).  This also includes your Mass intention and Easter/Christmas Offerings – so don’t forget to put your gift aid number on these too!  We would like to thank all parishioners who already participate in the scheme.

Future Dates:- Check out the calendar for upcoming events.

Church Cleaners - 8th / 9th: Saba Tekle, Nebiyat Zereome & Alem Araya Zemichael.

'Pray, Play & Tumble': will meet on Wednesday this week as Monday is a bank holiday.

Mondays 10-11.30am starting with prayer and praise in the church followed by refreshments/play time in the parish rooms and an optional session in the school soft room.  Suggested donation: £1.50 per child or sibling group.  Email: (removed for privacy) please check the newsletter or notice board. If you can let Susan know you are coming but otherwise do just turn up at ten.

Lourdes - 2015 Diocesan Pilgrimage: The Annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes (with the Catholic Association) will take place this year from Fri 21st–Fri 28th August. This year’s theme is ‘Joy of Mission', taken from the Evangelii Gaudium. 2015 is a special year for us in the Diocese of Southwark. Archbishop Peter mentioned in the Foreword in this year’s Southwark Directory - “This year marks a milestone on our diocesan journey as we celebrate 50 years as our diocese was raised to an ‘Archdiocese and Metropolitan See’ ”.
