1st Sunday of Lent

Welcome to Fr Stephen Langridge - our first Lenten preacher.  Many of you will remember a very young Fr Stephen who came here in 1989 having just been ordained.  He left here in 1994 (just before Fr Dinan) and went to Maidstone and from there Balham.  He is now the Vocations Director for the Diocese.  Fr Stephen was born locally and as a boy attended St Matthew’s Church, West Norwood and the Fisher School in Purley.  He studied at St Benet’s, Oxford and then went to Rome where he lived at the English College and studied at the Gregorian University.  It is unbelievable that he has recently celebrated 25 years since ordination! (He cannot be here for Saturday evening)

Lenten Extra Daily Mass In the three-fold dimension of Lent (prayer, fasting & almsgiving), the first understands some sort of intensification of our spiritual life.  During Lent we should try to go to at least one extra Mass in the week.  There we have provided for us in a short space of time, the Holy word of God, an opportunity to go to Communion, an opportunity to pray, and an opportunity to step out of our normal routine to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in which to rediscover a better perspective of our lives.

Stations of the Cross: Every Sunday during Lent at 5pm

Lenten Preachers: Upcoming Preachers are:

  • 1st Mar - Fr Martin Edwards (Wandsworth East Hill).
  • 8th Mar – Fr Michael Creech C.Ss.R.
  • 15th Mar – Fr Stephen Morrison O.Praem (Chelmsford).

Special Sunday - Today at 10.45 Mass: Ordinary: ‘Missa Vulnerasti cor meum’ by Cristobal Morales; Offertory: ‘Super flumina Babylonis’ by Giovanni Perluigi da Palestrina; Communion: ‘O quam suavis’; Recession: ‘Ave regina caelorum’ by William Byrd.  Music by Cantores Missae under the direction of Mr Charles Finch.  The next Special Sunday will be 15th March.

Pray, Play & Tumble starts Monday 23rd February 10am -11.30am in the club.   An opportunity for parents and carers to introduce very young children to their Christian faith.  We'll sing songs with actions, tell a Bible story and join in some short prayers.  Followed by teas and coffees, play, a simple art activity and maybe even a session in the school's soft play room!  Do join us.

Future Dates:- Check out the calendar for upcoming events.

Chartres Pilgrimage: The 22nd British Pilgrimage leaves London on Fri 22nd May at 1.30pm and arrives back on Tues 26th May at 4.40pm.  As it is half-term and there is a lack of space available on the ferry, we will travel by Eurostar this year and stay in a hotel in Paris before travelling by coach to Notre Dame on the Saturday.  Due to these changes, it has been necessary to increase the cost to £275 pp (children under 12 - £140).  The registration form (back of Church) should be completed and returned with a deposit of £50 pp to reserve your place.  Payment in full by 25th Mar – early booking is advised!

Message from SPUC: It is essential that we elect people to Parliament who will vote to protect unborn children and their mothers from the horror of abortion; who will uphold the right to conscientious objection to abortion in the health professions; who will vote to spare the elderly and the vunerable from the threat of being killed by assisted suicide and who will vote to maintain parents’ rights to withdraw their children from damaging sex education lessons in schools.  Please ask for a copy of SPUC’s general election handbook.  Call Paul Tully or Katherine Hampton on 020 7091 7091 or contact political@spuc.org.uk.
