1st Sunday of Lent

Lenten Extra Daily Mass:  In the three-fold dimension of Lent (prayer, fasting & almsgiving), the first understands some sort of intensification of our spiritual life.  During Lent we should try to go to at least one extra Mass in the week.  There we have provided for us in a short space of time the Holy word of God, an opportunity to go to Communion, an opportunity to pray, and an opportunity to step out of our normal routine to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in which to rediscover a better perspective of our lives.
Lenten Confessions: Saturdays 9.30-10am; 5.30 – 6pm.  Sunday: 9.40 – 10.15am; 11-11.30am.
Stations of the Cross:  Every Sunday during Lent at 5pm

Readers for Saturday 6pm Mass Urgently Needed! If you would be able to read during the Saturday Vigil Mass starting from 5th April, please give one of the priests your details so that we can add you to the rota.

Latin Missalettes: There has been a noticeable lessening in number of the Latin-English Missalettes over the last year; and the few that remain are in sorry condition.  If anyone has borrowed a Latin-English Missalette, could they please return it to the back table ASAP.  Thank you.

Message from Fr CB: Dear parishioners.  I hope this finds you all well.  It seemed very strange popping into St Bede's at the Epiphany knowing I was just passing through.  The method in my madness in coming to the Middle East was to escape winter but also to return to my roots.  I have been the oldest student here at Dar Comboni in Zamalek.  I am around the corner from the Flat where my parents (RIP) began their married life and next door to the Church my Mother used to attend but in those days it was not a Parish Church so they were married in the Franciscan Church in Bulaq where I was later baptised.  I was born at the Anglo American Hospital here where my Mother was a nurse before marriage. The Institute run by the Comboni Fathers and Sisters is affiliated to "PISaI" (Pontifical Institute for the Study of Arabic and Islam) which was founded years ago in Tunis by the "Peres Blancs" and moved to Rome in the 1960's.
Life in the Middle East is a challenge and good for impatient people like me.  It is a struggle to get things to happen.  The Arabic alphabet has been good for my humility and the traffic is so horrendous that it prepares me for the Last Judgement!!  Last month the big occasion was the Consecration of fr Romany's new Church which you helped to pay for. He has done a marvelous job and had to battle against the bureaucracy of the authorities. Thankfully it was not one of the Hundred victims of MB revenge (burning of Churches and schools) when the Government was toppled last summer. The economic situation here is sad as there are so few tourists and last month we had a suicide terrorist explosion which killed 4 Korean pilgrims returning to the Holy Land with their Coptic driver.
Fr. Martin Thompson visited me just after that so we were careful.  He is just an hour across the Med in Greece.  An old couple of St Bede's parishoners from Queensville Rd were at Mass in Heliopolis last Sunday - Flavio and Judith Centofanti - he also was born here - Small world!!
I miss you all and pray for you. Have a good Lent. Pray for me that my Visa for Iran might be forthcoming. I am very grateful the the Three Wise Men and the Four Wise Women who are keeping the Parish going in my absence!! Let us make the most of the Time we have!       Love and prayers - fr Christopher
