5th Sunday (Old Rite: V Sunday after Epiphany)

Our Need for Grace: God has not been content with creating us to His image and likeness.  He has endowed us with a gift which is so wonderful and so startling in it effects that theologians and the saints can never dwell upon it sufficiently.  For Divine grace is not only an additional gift; it is a gift which is equivalent to a new and fresh creation.  If God were to give a spiritual and immortal soul to a stone or a clod, the change would not be so complete as when He pours sanctifying grace upon the soul of man.  The rivers of Paradise flowed to every quarter of the Garden of Eden, bearing fertility to it and to the universe.  But the great stream of Calvary brings a higher and a more stupendous life and abundance.  For the reason and origin of the gift of grace lies in the Beatific Vision of God.  That vision means not merely the sight of God in the way that mortal faculties, however pure and unimpeded, may look upon Him.  It means, as Holy Scripture tells us, be seeing God face to face; it means that we shall see Him as He is.  Well do we profess to rely “solely on the hope of heavenly grace” in the Collect of this Sunday’s Mass.

APF – Mill Hill Mission Appeal: Fr Denis Treacy wishes to thank you for your warm welcome last weekend.  He managed to sign up 35 new members to the scheme.  If you did not become a member of APF – Mill Hill by taking a Red Box and you wish to do so, OR to find out more about APF – Mill Hill, please contact Dr Ann Holder, our local APF representative.
