16th Sunday OT (Old Rite IX Sunday after Pentecost)

First Mass of Fr Tom Lynch:  Yesterday Tom Lynch was ordained with four other men all for the Archdiocese of Southwark.  It is a proud day for Archbishop Peter Smith who ordained them with the laying on of hands followed by the anointing with sacred chrism and the presentation of the Paten and Chalice.  It is also a very proud day for this parish.  We congratulate Dominic, his father and John his brother and we rejoice with his late Mother, Gwen in the mystery of the Communion of Saints!  This parish has produced many vocations to the priesthood including the Beck brothers, one of whom became the Bishop of Salford.  Others include the Redding brothers, Frs. Duprez, Gower, and David Greenstock who was the Rector of the English College in Valladolid in Spain.  In more recent years, Canon Anthony Charlton and Fr John Henry came from St Bede’s and many of you remember Fr Philip de Freitas who was ordained here in 1998.  On the female side there were many vocations to religious life especially to La Retraite. Now we have Carol Cardenas on the way.
The photos of the Ordination of Tom & the other four Deacons can be seen here on the Catholic Church (England & Wales) Flickr page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/catholicism/sets/72157634722149796/
If anyone has photos of the Ordination or Fr Tom's first Masses, please forward to Fr Christopher and we will load onto the blog.

Apostleship of the Sea (2nd collection today): Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live & work at sea.  Many of us have never stopped to consider how important seafarers are to our standard of living.  Without them we would not have most of the items we use in our everyday lives.  Many of these seafarers are unable to practice their faith due to long periods away from home, whilst others are denied basis rights and working conditions that we take for granted.
Today's second collection is our opportunity to support the work of the Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), the offical maritime welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain.  This annual collection is absolutely vital to enable AoS to continue its work with seafarers.  Please give generously and remember seafarers in your prayers.  Thank you.  For more information on the work of AoS please visit their website at www.apostleshipofthesea.org.uk
