15th Sunday (Old Rite: VIII Sunday after Pentecost)

Ordination of Thomas Lynch: This coming Saturday at 12.30 our former server, Tom will be ordained in the Cathedral with several others by Archbishop Peter Smith.  The central act of the ceremony is the laying on of hands by the Bishop (and the priests present in union with the Bishop will also lay hands on the heads of those to be ordained).  Afterwards Tom’s hands will be anointed with the sacred chrism and the Bishop will present him with “the tools of the trade” – the sacred Chalice and Paten.  Before all of this, Tom will prostrate - that is lie flat as the litany of the Saints is sung.  Do come to this wonderful ceremony and if it not possible then make sure, you come to his first Mass next Sunday at 9.30am.  We are very proud of Tom and we congratulate his father, Dominic and his elder brother, John.  We fondly remember their remarkable Mother, Gwen, who in the community of Saints will be rejoicing.  Our last ordinations at St Bede’s were in 1998: Fr Philip de Freitas (he is in Wimbledon Common) and in 1975, Fr Anthony Charlton (he is at Tolworth). Please pray for Tom and his companions that they may become holy and zealous priests.

Apostleship of the Sea (2nd collection today): Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live & work at sea.  Many of us have never stopped to consider how important seafarers are to our standard of living.  Without them we would not have most of the items we use in our everyday lives.  Many of these seafarers are unable to practice their faith due to long periods away from home, whilst others are denied basis rights and working conditions that we take for granted.
Today's second collection is our opportunity to support the work of the Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), the offical maritime welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain.  This annual collection is absolutely vital to enable AoS to continue its work with seafarers.  Please give generously and remember seafarers in your prayers.  Thank you.  For more information on the work of AoS please visit their website at www.apostleshipofthesea.org.uk
