June - Month of the Sacred Heart: Last Friday we celebrated the feast of the Sacred Heart.  Our Blessed Lord says “come to me all you who labour and are heavy burdened, and I shall give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart …”  At the Crucifixion he was pierced by a lance and because of the blood and water which flowed from that wound it is often said that he died literally of a broken heart.  Devotion to the Sacred Heart developed over the centuries and the feast was instituted in the 17th century to counter the hard and merciless theology of the Calvinists and Jansenists.  Today it is more necessary than ever because many Catholic Christians profess belief in Our Lord Jesus without any piety or real devotion in their hearts.   We have to cultivate this friendship with the Lord in our daily prayer and it will bring our faith alive.

Congratulations: to Shahzad John (of Hydethorpe Road) & Lisa Marie Noronha who were married by Fr Christopher at the Jesuit Church in Dubrovnik last Monday.  Only the married couple and her Mum knew fr CB was coming and so there was a look of astonishment on the face of Lal (his Dad) who always comes to 8am and Nasr and Asif (Brothers) with wives and children.  The newly weds are now on the other side of the Adriatic in Venice.  Pray for them!

Goodbye: to Veronica Ramcharran and thanks to Maggie Keane, Dolores Smedley and Hazel Mawinney who after a generation and a half of service at St Bernadette’s are winding down their hours.
