3rd Sunday of Lent

WELCOME TO FR OLADELE CRAIG:  Our preacher/confessor for this weekend is part of the newly ordained class of 2012.  Fr Ola was ordained with two others by Archbishop Peter last July at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark.  Born in Nigeria, he was largely educated here & has been at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh (with our own Tom Lynch) for the past six years.  He has been appointed to the Holy Ghost, Balham since Ordination which is under new management (Mgr Gerry Ewing) as Fr Stephen Langridge is now full-time Vocations Director for the Diocese, based in Kent.   Frs. SL & CB are saying 8.30am and 11am Masses there.

‘SPECIAL SUNDAY’ NEXT WEEK 10.45AM (LÆTARE/MOTHERING SUNDAY):  The Ordinary will be Missa Vulnerasti cor meum by Cristobal Morales.  The Offertory: Super flumina Babylonis; the Communion: Ego sum panis vivus by Giovanni Perluigi da Palestrina and the Salutation of Our Lady: Ave regina coelorum by William Byrd.  (Sponsored by The Latin Mass Society & offered for their intentions)

CONCLAVE IN ROME: Each of us is asked to pray very much for the Conclave which should begin soon.  Over a hundred Cardinals from all over the world are assembling in Rome for the preliminary meetings before they get locked in together (with all electronic communication cut off!) until they reach a majority.  Then the smoke will be white and the bells will toll!

COLD CHURCH: An anonymous letter was received from someone at the 10.45 who complained that the Church and club was cold.  This is the first complaint of that nature we have received – usually it gets too hot and stuffy.  Just ask one of the priests if you feel you are cold in either place!  We want you to be comfortable!

LENTEN EXTRA DAILY MASS:  In the three-fold dimension of Lent (prayer, fasting & almsgiving), the first understands some sort of intensification of our spiritual life.  This past week a journalist from LBC rang about the Pope and was amazed that we had so many daily Masses!  These Masses are for you and we should be grateful that we have three (and on Thursdays five!) Masses every day.  During Lent we should try to go to at least one extra Mass in the week.  There we have provided for us in a short space of time the Holy word of God, an opportunity to go to Communion, an opportunity to pray, and an opportunity to step out of our normal routine to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in which to rediscover a better perspective of our lives.

AFRICAN & CARIBBEAN MEETING: Next week after 9.30 Mass

ST BEDE’S SOCIAL CLUB: will remain closed until Thursday - no teas & coffees after 9.30 and 10.45am Masses today - the FHC parents meeting this morning and Mothers & Toddlers on Wednesday are both cancelled for this week.

ST PATRICK’S NIGHT SUPPER: Saturday 16th March 7 for 7.30pm.  This will be organised by the Explorer Scouts to raise money towards the costs of their expedition to Portugal.  Give Scouts of Fr CB £10 to book place.

YoF EVENT - LENTEN LITURGIES OF RECONCILIATION 2013: During Lent, as part of preparation for the celebration of Easter it is appropriate to use the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  This Lent several Reconciliation services have been arranged across the Diocese.  These will be led by Archbishop Peter or one of the Area Bishops, supported by other priests from the Diocese.  The services will include a time of prayer and reflection, and an opportunity for one to one confession.  Our Deanery area's service will be held on Friday 15th March at 7.30pm - Corpus Christi, Brixton Hill and will be led by Bishop Patrick Lynch.  UPDATE: - due to the sad news that Fr Tom Heneghan, the Parish Priest of Corpus Christi died yesterday (Wed 6th March), this service has been postponed.

SOUTHWARK CATHOLIC YOUTH SERVICE – ‘BORN FOR THIS’: is a powerful and moving depiction of the Stations of the Cross written by CJM. Performed by young people from our secondary schools and musicians from the diocese, it is an excellent opportunity for reflection and prayer in preparation for Holy Week. Suitable for all ages. For more details contact info@scys.org.uk.  Aylesford Priory: Sat 23rd March 6pm. AND St. George's Cathedral, Southwark: Palm Sunday, 24th March, 7:30pm.  Free admission.
