5th Sunday OT. (Old Rite: Quinquagesima Sunday)

MARDI GRAS & LENT:  In Catholic countries Shove Tuesday is styled ‘Mardi Gras’ or ‘Carneval’. In the middle Ages it was the moment to use up the fat etc that would not be used during Lent.  Here at St Bede’s we will celebrate our successful Bazaar with a reception at 7.30pm in the club and we will want to look closely at the accounts so as to explore ideas for next November.
Archbishop Peter has sent us a Pastoral letter to help prepare us for Lent and so now is the time before Ash Wednesday to pray and think about our forthcoming Lenten resolutions.  In the Gospel Our Lord teaches us how to (and how not to!) pray, fast and give alms.  These are the three areas of Lent: doing something extra especially in the spiritual life, self denial especially in our intake of food and drink and finally generosity.  
Let’s us resolve today to commit to each of these three areas something quite definite and to encourage our children to do the same.  Lent is an old Anglo-Saxon word which means Spring so may the fruits come forth after forty days!   

BAZAAR ‘MARDI GRAS’ RECEPTION: You are all invited for a drink and snacks (hopefully pancakes!) on the evening of Shrove Tuesday 12th February at 7.30pm.  We will have a very short meeting at which we will review the last Bazaar and at which all of us can make suggestions.  The more we have - the richer the discussion! 
CONFIRMATION 2013 – APPLICATIONS CLOSE THIS WEEKEND: Bishop Patrick Lynch will come on 12th May.  If you haven’t already done so, please pick up a purple form from Fr CB.  

ST BERNADETTE’S SCHOOL: Fr Christopher B has swapped his position on the governing body with Mrs Kate Peacock.  She is now Chair of Governors and he is now Vice Chair.  Thank you very much Kate for all you do.   

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX SISTERS: are coming to England to sell Icons, Rosaries, CDs etc next week.  They will be at St Bede’s on Thursday for the 12.30 Mass and also for the 8pm Mass.     

KRYSTYNA DABROWSKA 1949 - 2013: Mrs Ostrynska, Mrs Davis and Fr CB with a group of other staff and ex-staff attended the Requiem Mass at the Polish Church in Ealing last Wednesday.   What a remarkable reception teacher she was!  She touched so many lives with her compassionate love, strong encouragement and deep Catholic faith.  Pray for her as she would want and pray for Janusz her devastated husband.  May she rest in peace.

For the last ten years the Catholics Bishops Conference has organised Parliamentary and Public Policy Internships for recently graduated Catholics.  This year we are looking to offer at least 6 internships:  Three interns will be placed with Christian MPs at Westminster, two in public policy with CAFOD and one in a media internship in Archbishop’s House Westminster.
