2nd Sunday OT (Old Rite: II Sunday after Epiphany)

SISTER RUTH ASHWORTH 1925-2013: Sister Ruth, born in Harrow, was professed a sister of La Retraite in 1945.  Her Father was a High Court judge; her Mother died early and he then became a priest.  Sister was educated at the Froebel Institute and studied later in Rome and Ireland.  In 1958 when La Retraite School (following the dictates of the 1944 Education Acts) split off the juniors from the seniors, St Bernadette’s and St Bede’s were built.  Sr. Ruth, at that time known by her religious name Mother Mary Teresa became the first head of St Bernadette’s which was a girls junior school with mixed infants; St Bede’s being a boys junior school owned by the Diocese. In 1964, Sr. Ruth took on the headship of their school in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset and from there became head at St Anslem's, Tooting Bec from where she retired in 1990.  After that time for many years, with Sr. Mary Garvey RIP, she served as a foundation governor for St Bernadette’s.  We owe so much to the Sisters of La Retraite and pray for dear Sr. Ruth whose funeral will be Tuesday at 11am in Burnham.
