22nd Sunday of OT (Old Rite: XIV Sunday after Pentecost)

Last Tuesday, August 21st, Fr Thwaites died peacefully at the home for old Jesuits in Boscombe near Bournemouth.  His funeral was this past Friday, August 31st also in Boscombe.  We will have a solemn Requiem here on Saturday 29th September at 12 noon.  Fr Linus Clovis is to be the preacher.  Fr Thwaites had an incredible life, being born into a family which had converted from Judaism.  He was an officer in the army and was well acquainted with Charles de Gaulle and got out of France just before the Nazi invasion.  In 1941 he went to Singapore and on route became a Catholic on board ship.  Soon after his arrival the Japanese invaded and he was incarcerated in the notorious prison camp of Changi.  With some Australian officers he helped build a Church for the prisoners.  Demobbed in 1946 he became a Jesuit and was ordained in 1954.  In 1968 he was appointed the International Student Chaplain and lived in Tooting and Brixton for years.  He lived here at St Bede’s from 1995 to 1997 and was a wonderful priest and gentleman.
