11th Sunday of OT (Old Rite: III Sunday after Pentecost)

Today our Archbishop of Southwark makes his first visit to our parish for the Centenary of our Sisters, the Handmaids of Mary (Siervas de Maria) who first came to London in 1912.  They soon settled at Holland Park and later opened another community in Poole, Dorset.  These two houses were closed and the nuns moved in to the old La Retraite convent in the spring of 1998.  Mother Lourdes Susaeta oversaw all that work and then went off some years later to make the foundation in the Philippines.  We welcome her here today with 60 Sisters (many who were in London) including Mother Provincial (Mother General is in Cuba for a centenary there).  We are very proud to have such observant religious in this parish and their apostolate of night nursing is not an easy one.  We were privileged to have the final profession here in 2005 of Sister Micaela at which the Papal Nuncio presided.  Recently one of our parishioners, Carol Cardenas, who was at La Retraite has entered and hopes to receive the white veil on 8th September.  Welcome back Carol

THE UNION OF CATHOLIC MOTHERS (UCM) wishes to thank everyone who supported them at their Table-top and Cake sale last Sunday in aid of the Priests Fund – they made £247.
