7th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Quinquagesima)

ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT

So often when we think about the beginning of Lent we can hear ourselves groaning. The idea of penance is at odds with our modern mentality. Yet just as an athlete has to train and avoid certain types of food so in the Christian life we need to exercise our weak wills. On Wednesday we will hear in the Gospel the three dimensions of Lent; prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We should think of some extra prayer I Masses I reading the Scripture. We should deny ourselves in some specific way and finally we should give our time or resources to others who are needy. Today Archbishop Peter Smith has sent us a pastoral letter and next week our first Lenten preacher and confessor will be Fr John Fleming from Australia (although he will not be here in time for the Saturday evening Masses). Fr Martin Thompson returned to Albania grateful for your generosity which amounted to £1,400. Now let us put our minds to being really serious about Lent 2012
